A coworking space just for parents, a home delivery service for kombucha, and nature bathing at the Botanic Garden—these are just a few of the highlights in this month’s cover story, “Best of North County.” The honor of Best New Restaurant goes to (spoiler alert) Death by Tequila, which we shot as a contender for the cover. The people in the photo are not models—they’re members of our new Insiders Club. The first 20 to sign up got to go behind the scenes with us in Encinitas, and it didn’t hurt that Top Chef: All Stars alum Angelo Sosa was serving up free bites and drinks. It was a great way to spend a Tuesday, and we plan on doing more fun gatherings like that in the future.
In this issue, we also publish our quarterly travel section. For “3 Days in La Paz,” I took a nonstop flight from Tijuana to the capital of Baja California Sur and finally got to swim with whale sharks. The moment that first giant, polka-dotted head appeared before me in the murky water was otherworldly. I’m sure only skydivers have felt so small. I got to swim with the shark for a few minutes as it leisurely glided through the water.
But if we’re talking about gigantic things moving slowly into Mexico, how about that public trial system getting implemented after 200 years? In “Court Is Now in Sesión,” Ian Anderson explores how San Diego’s very own Cal Western School of Law is training Latin American legal professionals in cross-examination, opening statements, and more. With so many Spanish-speaking lawyers in our city, it makes sense that we can be the perfect collaborator in Mexico’s effort to be more just and transparent.
One last thing: Our annual Best of North County party at the Park Hyatt Aviara is April 14. I hope to see you there and if not, perhaps at one of our Insiders events. I promise you, big things are coming your way!
