Food trucks have had a complicated history with Balboa Park. While the city allows mainstays like popcorn stands, tight restrictions have limited full-blown food trucks to city-sponsored events like December Nights. That’s all changing this month with the official launch of Food Truck Friday.
The program, a partnership between the Parks and Recreation Department and Balboa Park Conservancy, will host up to 10 food trucks—favorites like Cousins Maine Lobster and Sushi Uno are in the mix—in the Plaza de Panama Friday evenings from June 3 through September 2. The setup will also include live music, bean bags, and a photo booth. Booze isn’t allowed in the plaza, but that’s what the adjacent Panama 66 is for. TGIF indeed.
(Bonus: Some of the park’s most iconic museums will stay open till 8 p.m. on Fridays, May 27–September 2.)
