The semifinalists for this year’s James Beard awards were announced today, and San Diego appears once on the list. David Favela, founder of Border X Brewing in Barrio Logan—the first Latino-owned brewery in San Diego—was nominated for Outstanding Wine, Spirits or Beer Producer. We interviewed David on the Happy Half Hour podcast last summer: listen in to learn more about the brewery, which also expanded to a second location in Los Angeles. In the awards’ 30-year history, no San Diego chef, restaurant or brewer has won a James Beard Award.

The East Village is getting a new brewery! Bay City Brewing is opening its second location on Eighth Avenue on March 16. The brewery was started in Point Loma in 2015, and the urban tasting room will have a rooftop patio with a video wall and fire pits, event space, and a menu of pizzas, salads and chicken wings.

Addison recently unveiled its new look after being closed briefly for a refresh. The restaurant also named Victoria O’Bryan its wine director—she’s been the Michelin-starred restaurant’s lead sommelier since 2013.

Soi 30th North Park Thai Eatery is opening a new location in Ocean Beach, replacing the Subway on Cable Street. They announced on social media that they’re working on new menu items for the OB location.

Matteo Cattaneo, founder of Buona Forchetta, is having the opening for his namesake nonprofit eatery on Saturday, March 7. Matteo is open and serves an Italian spin on breakfast: tiramisu French toast, frittatas, and breakfast pizza.

After being closed for over a year, Costa Azul Coronado is back with a new location at Coronado Ferry Landing. This is big news for the island, as Costa Azul had been on Orange Avenue for nearly 20 years. The new location is in the space where Candela’s was, and has great views of the bay.
