Reinvention is the new name of the restaurant game. And the Cohn Restaurant Group (CRG) is paying attention in Hillcrest, where they got their start many moons ago. The main rethink of what was once 100 Wines is now the three-part concept BO-beau Kitchen + Caché, arguably CRG’s most successful restaurant to date, with aphrodisiac ambience and phenomenal Brussels sprouts. CRG designer Philippe Beltran is partly responsible for the magic of BO-beau, which debuted in Ocean Beach in 2010 and has now spawned four other locations. Chef Alex Watts will oversee some French bistro classics, like mussels lobster bisque, duck confit in peppercorn sauce, and beef Bourguignon in a red wine demi-glace.
Bars are like agendas—more intriguing when they’re hidden. To that end, Beltran has tucked a small Parisian-inspired bar called Caché within Bo-Beau. Here you can sip on craft cocktails and wine among vintage chandeliers, an art nouveau mural, wax-paper-lined walls, living trees, and assorted Frenchiness.

Finally, Libertad! goes in next door. It’s San Diego’s first not-for-profit taqueria, which means 100 percent of the profits will go to a charity that’s rotated every month (and selected by an independent board of San Diego’s charitable minds). CRG is guaranteeing each charity a minimum of $3,000, regardless of how many tacos they sell. Nicely done.
