In today’s Happy Half Hour, we’re broadcasting live from Puesto at The Headquarters, the modern Mexican restaurant known for its gourmet-style Mexican street food, Parmesan guacamole, and classic margaritas.
Erin Chambers Smith and special guest co-host Candice Ely, director of communications for the San Diego Tourism Authority, along with producer Archana Ram share the top dining and drinking stories around town. First up, a new speakeasy in Oceanside and the start of San Diego Beer Week (and make sure to check out our San Diego Brewery Guide for a comprehensive rundown of the city’s beer scene).
In “Hot Topics,” we discuss cake-cutting fees—the dollar amount assigned to a restaurant cutting a cake that a diner brings into the restaurant—and the avocado shortage that’s been plaguing restaurants, grocery stores, and avocado-loving homes everywhere. Lucien Conner, the self-proclaimed “Jefe” of Puesto, shares his thoughts on the problem and how Puesto has set up “avocado brokers” to make sure they can serve guac as usual. He also reveals the perfect recipe for a margarita and how to pick a juicy lime (hint: it’s not about color!).
Plus, we welcome Ryland Engelhart, co-owner of Café Gratitude, the Little Italy ode to plant-based foods and eco-minded values. Engelhart brings a ton of goodies, including their vegan desserts and wellness shots. They also have a noble mission this holiday season: On Thanksgiving, an all-volunteer staff will serve free meals to the community at Café Gratitude.
We also talk “Small Bites,” including a great date night restaurant and the best things we ate this month, like this Cali Taco.
