Parked most days next to the popular Nine Seas Seafood truck in South Park’s Target Express parking lot, La Taquería Vegiee has its work cut out for it, but the family-owned taco truck is up to the challenge.
Owner Hector A. Lopez and his family already run several plant-based restaurants in Tijuana, including the stationary namesake. Their San Diego location specializes in vegan riffs on traditional meat and seafood tacos. But the adobada taco is the star. The housemade meat substitute is smothered in a flavorful marinade and topped with guacamole, cilantro, and onions—served on a corn tortilla. As for the “meat”? It’s made by pulling the protein from barley, rye, and wheat, creating a texture that could fool (or convert) even the most skeptical carnivore.
Lopez himself has been vegan for 20 years. As he says, “Our goal is to open the new consciousness and grow respect for animals and our planet.”
