The postcard beaches that line the coast of San Diego stretch from the city center to the northern suburbs. And if Southern California’s iconic beaches are one of the main reasons to move to San Diego, why not stick close to the city then?

The answer lies in what San Diego’s suburbs have to offer.

These are not your typical green pastures with spaced-out mansions. Though if that is what your heart desires, San Diego has plenty to offer in that regard too. But what makes the suburbs of the San Diego area stand out are the developed commercial hubs, access to the beach, or, if you travel inland, access to some of the best outdoor trails of Southern California.

Even with the real estate market hurting for a greater inventory of homes to sell, buyers are not deterred from trekking to some of the best suburbs in San Diego County to see if they can secure the perfect home.

Below, the team at Prevu Real Estate has put together the top five San Diego suburbs that are in high demand right now.

Carlsbad

When it comes to tourism, city centers usually get all the love. But Carlsbad is famous for being a top tourist destination. And the attractions that bring visitors flocking to the West Coast are also responsible for this being one of the most desirable suburbs to live in San Diego.

Affectionately called the “Village by the Sea,” Carlsbad sits right on the Pacific Coast, about a 40-minute drive from Downtown San Diego. Some of the best beaches in the region are within reach, but there is also access to world-class attractions and a booming golf industry.

LEGOLAND California opened its first location here, becoming the first Lego park in the US. For those thinking that a theme park in their backyard might be too much, Carlsbad manages to maintain a laid-back feel throughout the city, and even in pockets of commercial activity, there is always the unmistakable, easy-going SoCal vibe.

Encinitas

The essential beach town suburb should offer a multitude of various beaches for residents to visit and take in the sunset. Encinitas makes the list because it has some of the most breathtaking beaches in California.

Towering bluffs, expansive ocean views, and down-to-earth community vibes make Encinitas one of the top suburbs to relocate to. But apart from the sand and blue waters, Encinitas is also home to the San Diego Botanical Garden and one of the biggest bamboo groves in the world. In short, there are more than enough ways to enjoy some of the best outdoor playgrounds in the Pacific.

Ease of travel to the city is also a top selling point. The I-5 takes commuters to Downtown San Diego within 30 minutes.

Solana Beach

Solana Beach rounds out the trio of the top beachside suburbs of San Diego, along with Carlsbad and Encinitas. It is the closest to the San Diego city center with just a 30-minute commute in ideal traffic conditions, but this is hardly the main reason to move here.

It might be best to explore Solana Beach from East to West. The eastern side, which stretches along the Pacific Coast, is where all the vibrant dining options, breweries such as Culture Brewing Co., and top beaches are located. Further to the West is Solana Beach’s take on suburbia.

Palm-lined streets and hilly terrain create a quaint, laid-back atmosphere which makes Solana Beach consistently rank as one of the best suburbs of San Diego.

Oceanside

It is hard to believe that Oceanside is considered a suburb. Yet, situated just north of Carlsbad, Oceanside is a city all on its own. Amidst the palm-dotted parks and a quintessential pier jutting out into the Pacific, Oceanside offers all the amenities of city life.

Moving here means you might not even need to worry about making a trip to Downtown San Diego. That is because Oceanside offers residents their own Downtown, packed with world-renowned restaurants and boutique stores that cater to all tastes.

This is also where you will want to search if your budget doesn’t quite meet the demands of Carlsbad and Solana Beach. While home prices in those suburbs have historically been high, Oceanside might offer the coveted beachfront lifestyle at a more approachable price point.

San Marcos

The further you move away from the beach, the more options you might find when searching for a San Diego home. But just because San Marcos isn’t resting on the Pacific Coast doesn’t mean it isn’t among the best suburbs of San Diego.

An abundance of lakes and breathtaking hiking trails make up for the lack of sandy beaches. In addition, the moderate temperatures typical to San Diego allow residents to take advantage of these outdoor gems year-round.

San Marcos stands out with a variety of housing options. Along with single-family detached homes, multiple planned communities have top-notch amenities such as pools and private patios. And because San Marcos is located inland, you might get more value for your dollar.
