This Friday marks the start of the San Diego Museum of Art’s 32nd annual Art Alive. A one-of-a-kind experience, this event matches up the city’s leading floral designers with works of art in the museum’s collection to interpret through flowers. Over 100 designers will take part. You can expect a variety of styles from modern minimalist interpretations to arrangements full of texture and overflowing blooms.
At it’s entry, the museum’s rotunda is adorned with flowers for the weekend and has become a hallmark of the event. The enchantment continues as you wander through the galleries, finding the elements in the art that carry through to the flowers. The care that each designer takes in mimicking an artwork’s smallest detail is inspiring. It’s a shame no photos are allowed.
There are three full days of activities and events so check the full calendar for times and ticket prices. We recommend going as early as possible as the flowers are freshest on the first day.
