Girl Scouts San Diego (GSSD) builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. As a cornerstone of leadership development for more than 100 years, GSSD is dedicated to serving girls from all backgrounds and fostering leadership development through four program pillars: STEM, Outdoors, Entrepreneurship, and Life Skills.

GSSD serves more than 24,000 members across San Diego and Imperial counties and maintains five properties: Balboa Campus, Escondido Program Center, Imperial Valley Center, and Camps Whispering Oaks and Winacka in Julian, CA. With more than 200 staff supporting more than 9,000 volunteers, GSSD guides over 15,000 Girl Scouts who are making the local community a brighter place.

Urban Campout 2024: Fortune Favors the Bold

On Friday, Sept. 13, GSSD will transform its Balboa Campus into a magical evening of celebration for Urban Campout 2024: Fortune Favors the Bold. San Diego Magazine CEO, Claire Johnson, will emcee the fundraising event, which promises to be a vibrant tribute to the daring spirit of Girl Scouting, encouraging all to embrace new experiences and chart their own paths.

At this ‘fun fundraiser,’ guests will step into an evening of enchantment and adventure under the stars. Attendees will participate in a range of exciting Girl Scout-inspired activities like archery and s’mores, indulge in local spirits and gourmet fare, experience the wonder of a fortune teller and wandering magician, and marvel at the creativity on display through bold and spectacular costumes.

Voices for Girl Leadership: Co-Chairs Share Their Passion

The co-chairs of Urban Campout 2024—Perette Godwin, Communications Program Coordinator, City of San Diego and longtime GSSD volunteer, and Emily Rex, Founder and CEO of Departure and Vice Chair of GSSD’s Board of Directors—believe deeply in the transformative impact of Girl Scouts. They are co-chairing the event because of their shared passion for bringing together the San Diego community to have fun while investing in the future of girls.

Rex, a Girl Scout alum herself, emphasizes the importance of the organization’s mission. “Girl Scouting empowers girls with the foundational skills to develop into confident and compassionate leaders, which has a positive ripple effect on families, schools, and society as a whole,” she says.

A Girl Scout parent, Godwin echoes this sentiment, highlighting the unique environment Girl Scouting provides. She says, “It is the best place for girls to learn without judgment, grow, explore, discover, and dream, in a safe and secure environment.”

Fortune Favors the Bold: A Theme of Empowerment

The theme ‘Fortune Favors the Bold’ resonates deeply with the Girl Scout mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

“Girl Scouting encourages girls to step out of their comfort zones, take risks, and seize opportunities to grow and learn,” says Rex.

Godwin adds, “What they gain through the program is invaluable. In that regard, they are indeed fortunate.”

As the event date approaches, Godwin and Rex look forward to the community’s creativity, boldness, and support in reaching the organization’s fundraising goals. Urban Campout is a vital opportunity to support Girl Scouts San Diego’s mission of empowering the next generation of bold leaders. The funds raised help fuel diverse programs, from outdoor adventures to STEM initiatives, all designed to inspire girls to explore their potential, face challenges with confidence, and make a lasting impact on their communities.Urban Campout: Fortune Favors the Bold is your chance to be a part of a special evening while making a difference in the lives of local girls.
