GKN Aerospace, a leading global supplier of airframe and engine structures, recently expanded its San Diego aero-repair operation to a new, state-of-the-art facility in El Cajon. The company, which supplies products and services to commercial and military aircraft, made the move to accommodate growth and increasing demand. They partnered with JLL, a Fortune 200 global commercial real estate firm to help search for a new location, identify sites, and negotiate favorable lease terms.

Building for the future

Despite the limited availability of options in their desired location, Damon Melda, who led the JLL team, successfully secured a site in El Cajon for the new industrial warehouse. He explains, “This was an exciting project to be involved in and to help propel GKN’s growth in El Cajon, where their roots date all the way back to the 1950s.” The location will accommodate a 158,000 square foot building, which is currently under construction and set to open later this year. The brand-new facility will house all new machinery and the latest technology.

Throughout the selection and design process, it was important for GKN to create a great workplace for its employees. GKN Project Director Aaron Parkinson explains that the modern construction will provide an optimally controlled environment, improving both safety and quality for their people and products. Upgraded HVAC and sound absorption systems will ensure employees are comfortable throughout the year. Parkinson adds, “We have multiple generations employed within our current facility and look forward to providing opportunities for future generations.”

The new space will also be equipped with solar panels, aligning with GKN’s sustainability initiatives. As a core mission of their business, the company has set a net-zero emissions target across the value chain by 2030. They have adopted a simple and straightforward approach to sustainability, striving to “do the right thing” for their employees, the planet, and technology.

Why San Diego

GKN has called San Diego home for over 50 years. As one of the largest defense and aerospace hubs in the country, the location is optimal for serving United States military customers. The city also offers a diverse and talented workforce with over 89,000 industry employees and close proximity to top local universities. The support of local economic development corporations paired with the high quality of life San Diego has to offer, made it an easy decision to expand operations locally.

What’s next?

GKN Aerospace is a global company with a local presence. They have operations spanning 12 countries with a robust customer base of over 500 companies. Their technology is present on 90 percent of today’s aircraft and involved in 100,000 flights per day.
