If “get cultured” is one of your New Year’s Resolutions, you’ve got a classic opportunity in San Diego Opera’s upcoming production of La Bohème. The story, set to music by Giacomo Puccini, follows a group of Bohemians and a young pair of ill-fated lovers. (If you’ve seen the musical Rent, it, too, was based on the same novel—and the opera is shorter!) La Bohème stars Alyson Cambridge—the Vanessa Williams of opera—as Mimì, and a dreamy, Billy Campbell-looking Harold Meers as the poet Rodolfo. The performance is in Italian with an English translation projected above the stage. Fun fact: La Bohème was the first show San Diego Opera produced, 50 years ago in 1965, so that’s something to sing about. Civic Theatre, January 24–February 1, sdopera.com
