The Original Torrie Horse
The Torrie Horse atop the Breeders’ Cup trophy is a reproduction of a bronze scuplture created by Giovanni da Bologna in Florence, Italy in the late 1580s.
American Flag: Vince Dalmaso’s horse doesn’t have his eyes on the prize— the prize is in his eyes.
Flying E: Erik Skoldberg included a portrait of Bing Crosby, who helped bring horse racing to Del Mar. Skoldberg’s vibrant pony also features images from a vintage Del Mar Turf Club program.
Torrie Horse Country
The decorated Torrie Horses are on display at businesses and in public locations around San Diego County, including Birch Aquarium, Fairmont Grand Del Mar, the Tasting Room Del Mar, The Lodge at Torrey Pines, and Red Tracton’s Steakhouse.
California Harmony: Tish Wynne combined historic horse racing imagery with classic California style. She even included an up-close look at famed racehorse California Chrome, the two-time Horse of the Year.
War Howler: Erik Skoldberg makes a statement with bold colors and pop art imagery.
Sea Horse 1: Marine life artist Wyland decorated his horse with various ocean creatures, and fittingly, a pair of seahorses that complement the lines of the Torrie Horse’s face.
