Rockstars of Tech
San Diego’s ‘it’ guy is finally showing up on our streets. After making waves last year for quitting his job as editor-in-chief of Wired magazine to join a San Diego-based start-up, Chris Anderson has kept a relatively low profile around town. And by “low,” we mean he doesn’t really live here. But as CEO, his support of 3D Robotics, a direct-to-consumer drone manufacturer, has been a boon. From a heady op-ed in the New York Times about San Diego and Tijuana being the next manufacturing mecca to glowing praise about 26-year-old self-taught robotics genius and Chula Vistan Jordi Muñoz, who founded the company—Anderson has been one high-octane, if unofficial, ambassador for San Diego as an innovation center.
And now he’s finally coming to town. Startup booster CONNECT booked him as a keynote speaker for their annual Rock Stars of Innovation Summit this month at the Hard Rock Hotel. “He’s really a big story,” said CONNECT CEO Duane Roth. “With research on this side of the border and other resources in Tijuana, there’s a real binational partnership. It’s been in place, but dormant, and is now coming back to life because more people are looking south for engineers, talent and production, instead of China.”
Rockstars of Innovation Summit runs April 11 to 12; tickets are $195. connect.org
Exhibit
Look, But Don’t Touch
This month, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Museum in Carlsbad will debut Aluminati: From Student to Star, a new exhibit series featuring the work of successful GIA grads. First up? Kara Ross, who designed this “Shirt Cuff” bracelet for First Lady Michelle Obama out of a fallen magnolia tree near the White House.
