A Family in Good Hands

Generations of Mickelsons, including pro golfer Phil, have a special connection to Scripps.

Mary Mickelson, perhaps best known as the mother of champion golfer Phil Mickelson, is a longtime friend of Scripps. Her mother was a volunteer “pink lady” at Scripps Mercy Hospital; she was born there; so were her sons. In 2009, Mary learned she had breast cancer, just weeks after Phil’s wife Amy was diagnosed with the same disease. Both Mary and Amy were treated by Thomas Buchholz, MD, at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and received the best of care. That level of care is now available closer to home at Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center, and her oncologist Dr. Buchholz is at the helm. Read more about how the Mickelsons support the collaboration here.
