Malashock Dance Company Turns 30 with a Bang

The modern dance troupe holds a 30th anniversary concert at Lyceum Theatre this month

By Sarah Pfledderer

Malashock Dance Company celebrates 30 years of fancy footwork this month with a five-night anniversary concert at downtown’s Lyceum Theatre. Staying true to their classic-meets-contemporary style and “marrying dance and music” mantra, portions of the new 11-person choreography will be set to onstage accompaniment by local pianist Ines Irawati.

Brainchild of Emmy Award–winning choreographer John Malashock, the troupe is an iconic name in San Diego dance. They’ve collaborated with everyone from the San Diego Symphony to the San Diego Opera and even the National Theater in Warsaw.

But the early years weren’t silver-spooned. They bounced around from one miscellaneous rehearsal space to another before finding a permanent home at Liberty Station in 2007. There, they’ve launched outreach programs and a dance school, ensuring decades more dancing to come. Fancy feet indeed!
