Kindred has filled a void in San Diego’s food scene that most of us didn’t realize existed. Who knew our city had such a large, enthusiastic crowd ready to devour creative vegan food with a gothic twist? But until recently the South Park bar and restaurant’s menu lacked a San Diego staple: the taco.
Originally concocted as a special tiki night offering (Kindred does a tropical-themed “Permanent Vacation” on Thursdays, with a new menu each month), the beer batter palm taco was added to the regular menu this summer by popular demand.
You won’t hear anyone at Kindred call this a fish taco, but it does lend itself to the comparison. The beer-battered hearts of palm and potatoes give it the texture, while the seaweed salad topping adds some ocean flavor. A generous dose of chile de árbol crema makes this taco surprisingly spicy. Served with a side of grilled corn on the cob, it’s the kind of taco you wake up craving in the middle of the night.
