Affectionately called San Diego’s “jewel box” of fine art, the Timken Museum of Art shines as one of the finest small museums in the world. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the museum is home to the Putnam Foundation’s significant collection of European old masters, 19th-century American art, and Russian icons. Notable work in the collection includes Rembrandt’s Saint Bartholomew (the only painting by the Dutch artist on public display in San Diego), Eastman Johnson’s masterpiece The Cranberry Harvest, and Parisian 17th-century tapestries illustrating the Stories of Queen Artemisia. The museum provides visitors with an enriching cultural experience featuring an exquisite collection, intimate surroundings, and perennially free admission.
