American Red Cross received a $125,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation on Sept. 21 at the Kearny Mesa Walmart store. The funds will support the Home Fire Campaign which focuses on reducing the number of home fire deaths and injuries in vulnerable communities. The statewide grant will be used to safeguard underserved community members by installing smoke alarms, and completing family home safety checklists and fire escape plans.
Takeda California hosted its 8th Annual Dog Walk benefitting Susan G. Komen San Diego on Sept. 21. Participants walked 1,215 miles raising $12,000 to support breast cancer patients or those at risk by providing free services such as free diagnostic mammograms, life-saving screenings, temporary financial aid for living expenses, meal deliveries, and research. The Takeda Dog Walk is part of the company’s ongoing dedication and commitment to society.
The 5th Annual Charity Golf Classic was held on Aug. 30 at the Crosby at Rancho Santa Fe and hosted by Walters Management. Warrior Foundation – Freedom Station was the beneficiary of the $50,000 raised. The organization uses the funds to provide quality-of-life items, support services and transitional housing designed to assist injured warriors and their families during recovery. Major sponsors included Pro-Tech Painting, Epsten, Grinnell & Howell, Park West Landscape, Pacific Properties Service and O’Connell Landscape Maintenance.

The San Diego Public Library Foundation is holding its Celebration Under the Dome on Oct. 7. Title sponsor is Qualcomm. Barrio Logan College Institute was selected to win the Community-Based Organization award, for its college success program. The award was presented on Sept. 21 in Washington D.C. The 2016 Examples of Excelencia, is an award that honors America’s top programs in colleges, universities and community based organizations that increase academic achievement for Latino students at the associates, baccalaureate, and graduate levels. BLCI was selected from among 190 programs from 33 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.
San Diego Symphony is presenting its OPUS GALA on Oct. 8 beginning with a reception in the Symphony Towers Lobby and followed by a Gala dinner at The University Club atop Symphony Towers. A concert featuring The San Diego Symphony Orchestra along with Michael Feinstein and Patti Austin. An After Party is being held back at the University Club. The Gala is sponsored by Van Cleef & Arpels.
St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center received a $500,000 gift from A-1 Self Storage. The funds will support renovations for a new Aquatics Locker Room Facility. Terrence and Barbara Caster founded A-1 Storage and have supported SMSC for decades, beginning with their volunteerism when their son, Brian Caster, and his siblings served at the Center during summers while growing up.
Walden Family Services received a $200,000 grant from the Weingart Foundation. The grant will allow Walden the flexibility to respond to changes in the foster care system, which is focused on keeping families together whenever possible and placing children who cannot return home with families rather than in group homes or institutions. Walden will also leverage the grant to attract individual donors and private funders and decrease the agency’s reliance on government funding.

The 48th annual Scripps Clinic Golf Invitational and Special Celebration honoring philanthropists Eileen and Jack Anderson IV raised $1.2 million. The 48th annual Scripps Clinic Invitational was held on Sept. 9 at the Torrey Pines South Golf Course. The Special Celebration also marked the opening of the new John R. Anderson V Medical Pavilion, which is named in honor of the Anderson’s late son, on the campus of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
