The Burnham Foundation has made a $125,000 pledge to National Conflict Resolution Center to expand its Galinson Campus Civility Project. The gift will enable NCRC to build on the project’s success at its five campuses . The Galinson Campus, named in honor of Murray and Elaine Galinson, has emerged as a national model in addressing a fundamental challenge to higher education: balancing the principles of free speech and open inquiry with the need to respect differing viewpoints and teach civil discourse. “Our support of the Galinson Project is an investment in the future of our diverse and global society,” said philanthropist Malin Burnham.
The Sharp HealthCare SuperFood Drive was conducted over a 6-week period by the Sharp team and collected 2,920 pounds of nutritious food and donated $2,883 to the San Diego Food Bank. This translates into 15,805 meals for the 485,000 San Diegans who need help feeding their families. The food drive donations help nourish the at-risk health of those on the receiving end.
SDCCU Toy Drive
San Diego County Credit Union customers and employees donated toys for its seventh annual Holiday Toy Drive benefiting Rady Children’s Hospital. Throughout December 2016, SDCCU’s branch locations served as a drop-off location for toys that were donated to benefit children who are in pediatric care.
Big Brothers Big Sisters
Big Brothers Big Sisters launched a new program to provide mentors to Chaldean Refugee children. The program, Ayana (helper) will provide life-changing, mentoring friendships through BBBS one-to-one mentoring model for refugee youth. A Comedy Night Gala fundraiser was held in December raising $18,000 to support the Ayana program. The event was planned by the Ayana Affinity Alliance Group.
As a kickoff to Burn Awareness Week, the Burn Institute hosted a 5K on Feb. 4th at Road Runner Sports in Kearney Mesa. Their community partners including the Poway Fire Department, San Diego Gas & Electric, US Forest Service, and San Diego County Fire Authority. Sponsors included American Medical Response, San Diego City Firefighters Local 145, Simplex Grinnell and IBEW Local 465.
Geniya Manchester and Papa Doug
USO San Diego has dedicated a STAR to Papa Doug and Geniya Manchester in recognition of their patriotism and philanthropy in support of the U.S. Military and USO San Diego. Manchester is a long-time champion of the U.S. military. Last year, he served as the Presenting Title Sponsor for USO San Diego’s 75th Anniversary Stars and Stripes Gala: “It takes a City to Support our Military.”
The American Red Cross has joined with the Harlem Globetrotters as its official charity partner as part of the team’s Great Assist initiative. The Globetrotters will feature the Red Cross at their games in San Diego on Feb. 10 and 17 at Valley View Casino Center. As part of a two-year partnership, the American Red Cross will engage the Globetrotters in all aspects of its mission. During the first year, the team will join with Red Cross as the organization works to install its millionth smoke alarm by Oct. 2017.
