Twenty San Diego County high school seniors got a surprise $5,000 scholarship from Cox Charities during its 20th anniversary celebration June 6 at Coasterra. While the students were aware they’d be receiving a scholarship, they were kept in the dark about the amount.

In total, Cox Charities, the philanthropic arm of Cox Communications, has awarded $1.6 million in scholarships to more than 650 students.
