The Women’s Auxiliary of The Salvation Army has announced the twelve women who will be honored at the 53rd annual Women of Dedication Luncheon. Among those being honored are Deborah Cross, Angela Harris, Regina Kurtz, Kimberly Hunt, Rana Sampson and Kathryn Vaughn. The twelve women are recognized for their service to the San Diego County community. The event, “Wonder Women” is being held at the Marriott Marquis on May 30.
Biz Kid$ has been named the beneficiary of the 2017 San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl. The Emmy award-winning financial literacy program teaches kids how to use credit wisely and educates them on the importance of saving, budgeting, investing and giving back to their communities.
UPS volunteers delivered poinsettias and gift cards to seniors and spent time visiting with them. City Council member, Marti Emerald stopped by to honor the event’s “first gift” recipient . For many, this is the only visitor and gift they receive during the season. Sponsors included Hill Compliance Advisors, Lowes Home Improvement Stores, the Mirandon, Foundation for Hope, 2-1-1 and PAWS San Diego. AMN Healthcare, Wawanesa and Intuit provided gift card donations and support.

On December 6, Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego unveiled a new baseball-themed play space named the San Diego Padres and Fowler Family Playroom. Together, Ron and Alexis Fowler and the Padres Family Association donated $75,000 for the playroom’s creation. The playroom features Padres décor and a dugout -inspired reading nook, baseball beanbags, and interactive play spaces for children and parents.
On December 14 Sycuan presented $70,000 to 30 charities during its Gift Giving Ceremony. Each year, members of the Sycuan Tribal Council and the Sycuan Executive Team choose one charity to donate to. Representatives of the 30 recipients attended the Ceremony and discussed their mission and how the funds would be used. The event was held at Paipa’s Buffet inside Sycuan Casino.
Mama’s Kitchen sold 4,500 pies during their thirteenth annual Pie in the Sky Thanksgiving Bake Sale. A total of $135,000 was raised during the six-week sales period. Proceeds will fund more than 46,232 free, hot and nutritious Mama’s Kitchen meals, which ensures no one living with HIV, cancer or other critical illnesses will go hungry in the San Diego community. Sponsors included Sycuan,Wells Fargo, Jerome’s Furniture and Bergelectric.
The UPLIFTing Citizens Tribute “Share the Spirit”, was held on November 28 at the USD Hahn Forum Ballroom. Dr. Ken Blanchard was the honoree. UPLIFT also awarded HHSA the first Collaboration Champion Award for Project One For All, the Housing Subsidy & Mental Health Services program for San Diego County Homeless clients. The 10th anniversary celebration featured The Salvation Army Brass Band Holiday Music and Ed Kornhauser Trio & Voices of Our City Choir. Sponsors included Ball Auto Center, Wakeland Housing & Development Corporation, Valley View Casino and Casey Development. The event raised $50,000 to help provide furnishings and homegoods to 43 families moving off the streets.
Promises2Kids
On November 30 Promises2Kids hosted an inaugural event, Distilled: A Whiskey Tasting at Moniker Warehouse. Guests enjoyed whiskey tastings from 20 local distilleries. The event was a social opportunity to address and raise awareness about issues in foster care and what individuals can do to make a difference in a child’s life. Through its programs Camp Connect, Guardian Scholars, A.B. and Jessie Polinsky Children’s Center and Foster Funds, Promises2Kids creates a brighter future for foster children.
