The San Diego Center for Children’s 132nd Anniversary Celebration, Cherishing the Joys of Childhood, raised $400,000 at Humphreys by the Bay on Shelter Island. The critical funds will support the Center’s programs and services for local children and families struggling with mental, emotional and behavioral health challenges. During the event, guests enjoyed food stations, a live auction, and a special concert by pianist and composer, Matt Savage, a savant on the autism spectrum. The Center’s Children’s Choir also sang and shared the stage with Center youth performing spoken poetry. And as a testament to the Center’s therapeutic services, transition age youth proudly served appetizers that they had made.
The Center’s music director, Sundiata Kata, received the 2019 PATH Award to commemorate his 50 years of impact at the Center. “PATH” stands for “Partners in Achieving Transformation and Hope,” and the award recognizes supporters and partners of the Center who have made a significant impact.

The San Diego Foundation Donor & Legacy League Appreciation Luncheon honored philanthropists for their generosity and for partnering with The San Diego Foundation to maximize the impact of their gifts. Approximately 200 guests attended the April 30 event and were able to hear author and New York Times columnist Ron Lieber speak about his life and the importance of inter-generational giving.
For nearly ten years, The San Diego Foundation has worked with local organizations, such as Casa Familiar (pictured above), to connect, protect and increase access to nature across the county.
The Outdoor Foundation’s nationwide Thrive Outside Community Initiative chose San Diego as one of four communities to receive a multi-year capacity-building grant. This grant will boost programming and partnerships between local orgs (like schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, and YMCAs) and nonprofit conservation and outdoor organizations. The goal is to provide kids and families of all backgrounds with joyful, repeat outdoor experiences. Get outside, kids!
