20th Annual Race for the Cure Raises $1.1 Million

The Susan G. Komen San Diego held its 20th Annual Race for the Cure on Nov. 6 in Balboa Park. The 5K and 1 mile walk/run proceeds are used to fund free breast cancer services and support including free diagnostic mammograms, life-saving screenings, temporary financial aid for living expenses, transportation, meal deliveries and education. Over 12,000 walkers and runners participated to raise $1.1 million.

Casa Cornelia Law Center raised $175,000 at the ninth Annual La Mancha Awards event which was held at USD’s Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice. The funds are used to help meet the mission of providing pro bono legal services to victims of human and civil rights violations. Latham & Watkins LLP and the Society of the Holy Child Jesus were major sponsors.

The 2016 UPLIFTing Citizens Tribute “Make a Joyful Noise” was held on Nov. 1 at the Downtown Central Library Courtyard and Auditorium. This year’s 2016 UPLIFTing Citizens who were recognized for their acts of faith, love and goodwill in the community were: Council member Myrtle Cole; Philanthropist Joyce Glazer; Channel 10 KGTV News Anchor Kimberly Hunt; San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus Executive Director Bob Lehman and Music Director San Diego Symphony Jahja Ling. Proceeds benefit student services and homeless services of UPLIFT.

California State University San Marcos received a $200,000 grant from the Stuart Foundation to improve literacy through the arts access for all children to a better education by improving literacy through the arts; including technical assistance to implement arts plans, professional development, and mentoring. The program, called ART=OPPORTUNITY, will include a series of summits, special events and training.

USS Midway Foundation – Armed Services YMCA

The USS Midway Foundation awarded $210,000 to ‘Pillars of Freedom’ organizations. The Foundation, formed to support the Museum’s vision of becoming America’s living symbol of freedom, focuses on organizations that serve those who have protected America’s freedoms.

Active-duty family service organizations will receive $130,000; Veterans organizations receive $50,000; and $30,000 to United Through Reading for books to family members back home. An additional $30,000 will be awarded to provide mass-casualty trauma kits in San Diego police vehicles through the San Diego Police Foundation.

The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary presented the 2017 Women of Dedication honorees at a reception on Nov. 3 at La Jolla Country Club. Those being honored for their volunteer and community service are Dee Ammon, Sally Fuller, Susan Hoehn, Norma Jones, Caroline Nierenberg, Rosemary White Pope, Nayda Locke, Yolanda Selene Walther-Meade, Tracy Lyon, Evangeline Sharpe, Joani Wafer and Olga Worm. The presentation will be held on Mar. 23 at Manchester Grand Hyatt.

The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of San Diego hosted a Charity Golf Classic on Oct. 7 benefiting STAR/PAL at Riverwalk Golf Club. IIAB San Diego raised $10,000 for STAR/PAL youth programs.
