Charitable giving is alive and well in San Diego. Here is a taste of the good works happening around the County.
Happy 100th Birthday, Jewish Family Service of San Diego! To celebrate, JFS is kicking off a $37 Million Centennial Countdown Campaign. While it sounds ambitious, Rady Family Foundation has already committed $20 million, with up to $17 million available in one-to-one matching funds.
A live auction at Scripps’ Mercy Ball (March 10) raised a record-setting $700,000 for trauma care at Scripps Mercy Hospital.
Philanthropist Denny Sanford is supporting scholarship students at UC San Diego and National University, donating $500,000 per year for ten years. The gift that keeps on giving is part of a $30 million donation to the Horatio Alger Association and ten other U.S. universities.
San Diego County Credit Union one-upped itself during its Presents for Paws fundraiser, drawing in nearly $5,000 more than last year. They raised almost $18,000 for the San Diego Humane Society, Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center in Riverside County and the Animal Assistance League of Orange County. The money will go to animal medical care and community education concerning adoption and good pet parenting.
It was all about “people helping animals, animals helping people” at Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 9th Annual Puppy Love 5K, presented by Blue Buffalo and with support from Petco Foundation. The event at the “EmBARKadero” featured a run/walk, canine costume contest, interactive booths, food, and a whopping $72,000 raised for Helen Woodward’s orphan pet programs.
The San Diego County Bar Foundation is granting a total of $105,000 to 14 local nonprofits. Recipients include Elder Law & Advocacy, which provides pro bono legal help to low-income seniors in the County and California Rural Legal Assistance, which brings legal services to agricultural workers in the Migrant Farmworker Program.
In celebration of Pancake Day (February 13), Snooze, an a.m. Eatery raised a total of $30,513 for community gardens in all Snooze area locations. Torrey Pines Elementary, Jefferson Elementary School, and Del Mar Heights Elementary all received some green for their greens. Garden Day is April 12.
