Alexander and Eva Nemeth Foundation pledged $5 million to Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns. They will support two programs for at-risk infants: the Neonatal Research Institute, which was launched in 2013 to discover new treatments and practices for newborns, and the Nemeth NICU Follow-Up Clinic, which seeks to improve the lives of preterm babies. In November, the Clinic will enjoy a newly expanded location across from the Mary Birch campus.

More than 600 guests attended the Jewish Family Service of San Diego’s Heart & Soul Gala on April 21. JFS was able to raise a record-setting $1.25 million to help people in crisis and use new strategies to break cycles of poverty in San Diego. Evelyn and Ernest Rady matched the donations during the “Fund-a-Mitzvah” auction.
This year’s Heart & Soul Gala was an incredible celebration of our first 100 years, and an important beginning to our next 100 years,” said JFS CEO Michael Hopkins. “The support we have received from the community is deeply humbling and will provide the vital resources to help San Diegans build more stable, secure lives.”

National City’s Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego-Bob Payne Family Branch will receive a new technology center, thanks to a grant from Cox Communications and The James M. Cox Foundation. The tech center’s aim is to “bridge the digital divide” for those who have no computers or internet access at home. It will help kids needing to complete their homework and prepare for further academic and professional success.
Cox is dedicated to the National City community and to providing youth access to technology and best practices for staying safe online,” said Cox Communications SVP and Region Manager for California, Sam Attisha, who is himself an alum of the El Cajon Boys & Girls branch.
