Mini-Concert | Loie Flood & Rosalind Richards, piano & flute | Athenaeum Music & Arts Library

About the Event

Pianist Loie Flood and flutist Rosalind Richards and play regularly at many venues throughout San Diego. Rosalind is a member of a flute ensemble in Sorrento Valley and was a principal flutist at the La Jolla Civic Orchestra. Loie is an accompanist at UCSD for Phil Larson’s choir, and she plays violin with the La Jolla Civic Orchestra. Both are also members of a classical trio and play at weddings, parties, receptions, and libraries.

Rosalind Richards, composer and classically trained flutist, known for her popular world-inspired music, has composed many music collections including new age, jazz and world music styles from such cultures as India, Ireland, Japan, Medieval Europe and Peru. Her albums are an exciting and unique mix of cultures interpreted with jazzy rhythms and soulful flute harmonies. At times the tracks are upbeat and energetic, while at other times they are longing and meditative.

Rosalind has taught world music classes at two San Diego universities for 10 years. She holds a Master’s degree in flute performance and music history. She is also a professional flutist and combines the love of performance and the love of historical and world cultural music in her compositions.

Rosalind has been composing and performing for 25 years. Some of her influences have been Herbie Mann and Paul Horn. Her career had an amazing start when her group Ginseng played concert venues with the Frank Zappa group Mothers of Invention. Her music is also heard in film soundtracks and has airplay internationally.

Free concerts at noon every Monday year-round . . . no wonder the Mini-Concerts are the longest-running and one of the most popular classical music series at the library! This series was founded by Glenna Hazleton in 1970 at the Athenaeum, and has been going strong ever since. The concerts feature both local and touring musicians, prize-winning students, university music faculty members, local chamber ensembles. . . and the repertoire also includes jazz, folk, and world music. There are no reservations, no tickets . . . just line up at the side door of the Athenaeum before noon. (Donations are always welcome!) Mini-Concerts take place every Monday at noon and last about an hour.

The concerts will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. There are no physical tickets for these events. Doors open at 11:50 a.m. Seating is first-come; first-served. These events will be presented in compliance with State of California and County of San Diego health regulations as applicable at the time of each concert.
