Vencie Glenn earned a lot fans during his NFL career from 1986 to 1995. These days he spends his time at Steele Canyon Golf Club. Designed by Gary Player and carved into the foothills of Jamul, Steele Canyon boasts drastic elevation changes, pure greens, and healthy variety. It also provides memorable experiences between golf shots with a winding golf cart ride through an actual working ranch, dozens of olive trees, and zen-inducing water features.
Vencie considers himself a “soul golfer,” and this course suits that perfectly. Steele Canyon has had its number of soulful moments for me, too. During one of his many visits in the early 1990s, Mr. Player looked out from the elevated number one tee box of the Ranch Nine, took a deep breath, turned his face to the sun with his eyes closed, and said to me, “This place has a special feel to it. It’s one of my favorite pieces of work.” Every time I stand on that same tee box, I take a minute to breathe, just like he did. Oh, how I wish it would guarantee a good tee shot.
And let’s not forget the restaurant. Chef Calvin Banks hails from Memphis, where BBQ was his specialty. So when head golf pro Alan Scheer says the Western burger with glazed bacon is the best you will ever have, believe him. The tri-tip sandwich is also something everyone needs to experience.
The newly renovated patio with spectacular views, a generous happy hour, and plans to add an outdoor bistro all make Steele Canyon yet another feather in the golf bag for San Diego residents.
