On Sundays I find myself wanting to go out to discover the city; however, I also want to hit pause and linger. This is why I love Panama 66. You can visit museums or go for a hike in Balboa Park and still relax with a delicious meal at the gastropub, located next to the San Diego Museum of Art.

For someone who eats a lot of plant-based foods, seasonality of ingredients is important. It allows for a variety of different flavors based on the rotation on the vegetable calendar. At Panama 66 the entrées are modified depending on what arrives at their kitchen from Suzie’s Farm. The summer squash sandwich on the menu through the summer is perfect—grilled squash mix, avocado chermoula, and arugula salad, all on a warm, homemade focaccia. The squash is not overcooked, so the sandwich has a great crunch to it, and the avocado in the chermoula adds a silky layer to the mix.

Service is fast casual, but the space allows for guests to hang out for as long as they wish. Just what I need on Sundays.

TIP: The hours of operation at Panama 66 depend on events happening at the park, including weddings. Follow them on Twitter or Instagram @panama66sd to keep up with their regularly updated schedule
