For the petite taqueria that it is, North Park’s Tacos Perla whips out an impressive number of tacos. Among the dozen varieties, which include a sizable vegetarian selection, ingredients span unique fillings like cloves and a Mexican pesto made with chilies.
But it’s the Del Mar taco that keeps us coming back. Wild-caught Mexican shrimp is marinated in ginger and chilies, then stuffed into a handmade tortilla and topped with Jack cheese and avocado. It’s tangy, a little spicy, and plenty juicy—and that’s even before drizzling their six unique salsas that range from mild to scorching.
For something traditional, try the medium-level pico de gallo. Want to really tickle those taste buds? The “extra hot” carrot habanero salsa is a five-alarm fiesta. But these tacos won’t be around for long—the eatery, owned by the team behind The Pearl Hotel, will close its doors in August to focus on real estate and will be replaced by The Taco Stand. So get it while it’s hot!
