Crêpes & Corks

1328 Camino Del Mar, Del Marcrepesncorks

At Crêpes & Corks I can get something savory and order a bottle of wine before noon without judgment. I always have the pesto chicken crepe—grilled chicken, tomatoes, roasted red pepper, spinach, Jack cheddar, and a creamy pesto sauce—but I change up my wine order, since they have a good list. I might go local with Fallbrook Winery’s 33°N or get a favorite like L’Artista’s Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Best of all, there’s never a wait.

Con Pane

2750 Dewey Road, Liberty Station

I’m a Point Loma native and always enjoy a pastry and coffee from Con Pane. Their cinnamon roll is classically done: soft dough, cinnamon, cream cheese frosting, and a hearty amount of butter. You can opt for one with raisins, but I stay basic. The dough-icing ratio is just right. And the café itself makes for a casual, quick place to brunch. No wait times. Just bread. And that’s more than enough for me.

Carnitas’ Snack Shack

1004 North Harbor Drive, Embarcadero; 2632 University Avenue, North Park carnitassnacks

If it seemed like I was having an extra-great time parenting at Waterfront Park on Sunday, thank the folks making the Bloody Mary at Carnitas’ Snack Shack. Their version is citrusy and bright, made with green chili vodka for a long, slow burn. And while normally I eschew a pork garnish (flashy! desperate!), the chicharrones served atop this drink are a perfect complement to the spice—delivering crunch and salt in a more subtle way.

Fig Tree Café

416 University Avenue, Hillcrest; 2400 Historic Decatur Road, Liberty Station; 5119 Cass Street, Pacific Beach figtreecafesd

There are no exotic ingredients in Fig Tree Café’s chicken sausage omelet, just a whopping egg blanket snuggled up with bell peppers, Jack cheese, onions, and salsa verde. But paired with perfectly crisp house potatoes and iced-coffee-cubes cold brew, it’s enough caffeine and protein to have you bounding out of your chair and whistling the Popeye tune. (Bonus: Everyone on staff is attractive. For reals; I get a new crush every time I go.)

Hanna’s Gourmet

2864 Adams Avenue, Normal Heights hannasgourmetsd

Hanna’s Gourmet is my special place. It’s warm and inviting, and chef Hanna Tesfamichael makes each dish taste like a home-cooked meal. Her carrot cake pancakes are no exception. They’re much lighter and less sweet than other pancakes in town, with chunks of walnuts to balance out the carbs. Plus, the plate comes with a dynamite side of cream cheese frosting. I wash it all down with their bottomless coffee from Cafe Virtuoso.

Cody’s La Jolla

8030 Girard Avenue, La Jolla

I order eggs Benedict every weekend no matter where I am brunching. I think of myself as a connoisseur, and hands down my favorite Benedict is at Cody’s La Jolla. While most people go to Cody’s for the crab Bennie, I love the Traditional. The English muffin is toasted just enough that you don’t need to saw through it, the ham thick and juicy, the egg cooked to perfection, and once poached and mixed with the hollandaise—food coma.
