How the sale of homes in San Diego is providing shelter for people in the Philippines
I’m working on our second annual Big Ideas feature, and suddenly I have begun to see Big Ideas everywhere I look. I’m so inspired!
Take the free exhibit, Rethink Downtown: Behind San Diego’s Skyline, which looks at 250 years of San Diego development and takes visitors through several architectural and city planning “rethinks.” An accompanying lecture series takes place in the gallery, and tomorrow night I’ll be attending one entitled “Rethinking Community Building Worldwide.”
I was surprised to learn that about 14 percent of the world’s population lives in slums. World Housing works to give homes to some of these families. Partnering with this org is Bosa Development, which is behind Rethink. Bosa is building a 41-story residential tower called Pacific Gate, and with the complete sale of these downtown San Diego condos, Bosa will donate a 64-home community in Manila, which will put a roof over the heads of 300 people living in Manila.
Now that’s one Big Idea. If you agree and want to know more, I’ll see you at tomorrow’s lecture.
Rethink Downtown, open daily 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., 700 First Avenue, Downtown
