In 2009, Juan Ramos’ world turned upside down. The Los Angeles native and competitive soccer player noticed he was gaining weight and had a cough that wouldn’t go away. His legs were swelling, and he had developed a rash on his neck and chest. He went for a physical and when he got the test results, he was shocked. He was in kidney failure. He was just 21. Juan started dialysis and joined the national transplant waitlist. Then, a chance meeting with a Scripps Health transplant physician changed the course of his treatment. Juan began commuting from Riverside to receive care at Scripps and became more optimistic about getting a kidney. On Dec. 12, 2015, he got the call. Read more about Juan’s journey to recovery here.
