Kitchens for Good and Big Table are excited to announce the return of WASTED: Save the Food Festival, set to take place on October 9 and 13, 2024, at the picturesque South Promenade in Liberty Station, San Diego. This innovative event will challenge perceptions about food waste while celebrating the culinary creativity of local chefs.

A Culinary Revolution

WASTED is a unique zero-waste festival that invites 25 premier chefs to repurpose ingredients that would typically go to waste into mouthwatering small plates. This year, festival attendees can expect to indulge in an array of delicious bites while learning about sustainable food practices. The festival portion of the event occurs on October 13 and runs from 11 AM to 3 PM, offering a vibrant atmosphere filled with culinary delights and educational opportunities.

The WASTED festival is a family-friendly event, with activities tailored for children alongside the main attractions. Attendees can participate in chef demonstrations, hands-on workshops, and interactive exhibits that teach practical ways to reduce food waste at home. The festival also encourages guests to vote for their favorite WASTED dishes as local chefs compete for first prize.

For those looking for a more intimate culinary adventure, the VIP WASTED Dining Experience will take place on October 9, 2024. This exclusive event features a five-course zero-waste meal prepared by local celebrity chefs and Kitchens for Good’s talented staff at Building 177 in Liberty Station. Guests will enjoy a seated dinner while learning about the importance of sustainable cooking practices.

The festival is not just about tasting good food; it’s a call to action. According to the UN’s Food Waste Index Report, over $1 trillion worth of food is wasted annually, contributing significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions. WASTED seeks to address this pressing issue by promoting sustainable eating habits and encouraging attendees to rethink their relationship with food.

A Celebration of Local Culinary Talent

The WASTED festival and private dinner will feature notable chefs, including Chef Davin Waite of Wrench and Rodent, Chef Kari Cota of Alma, and Chef William Eick of Matsu, who will showcase their culinary talents by creating innovative dishes from often-overlooked ingredients. Each of the participating chefs will be paired with an active apprentice from Kitchens for Good, providing invaluable hands-on experience in a real-world setting.

As San Diego continues to grow as a culinary destination, WASTED stands out as a celebration of local food, farms, and the vibrant community that supports them. This event not only highlights the importance of sustainability but also fosters a sense of camaraderie among food enthusiasts, chefs, and local organizations dedicated to making a difference.
