Plastics are everywhere. It’s nearly impossible to avoid exposure to plastics in some form. Product packaging, synthetic fabrics, single-use bottles and bags, kitchen utensils and many other everyday items can shed small particles, called microplastics, which end up in the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. A growing number of studies have shown that they’re also present in our bodies.
