For more than four decades, visionary architect Douglas H. Austin has transformed downtown San Diego with some of the most iconic additions to the city’s skyline, including Ariel Luxury Apartments, Smart Corner, and Children’s Museum Tower. Two years ago, Austin’s firm, AVRP, merged with longtime friends and collaborators at Skyport Studio to create AVRP Skyport. “You’re only as good as your people and the ideas you come up with,” Austin said. In its efforts to redesign Seaport San Diego, the new powerhouse in urban planning and design is knitting together the Bayfront and downtown to establish San Diego as a world-class city to rival any other. “We asked ourselves, why do we exist? We narrowed it down to a simple statement: We’re here to design amazing things.”
