Hiring: Independent Media Sales Representative (Custom Publishing Lead)

Department: Sales

Status: Part-time, Independent Contractor (Commission only, with strong growth potential into a full-time role)

Closing Date: June 15, 2026

Not gonna lie. It’s a great feeling to “sell” a product that not only tells the stories of San Diego’s people and culture—but also has a proven track record of ROI for brands, with real numbers to back it up and rave testimonials from clients.

Fresh off a national media award and the launch of two successful new ventures—Here We Are Studios and Del Mar Wine + Food FestivalSDM is growing… fast. Our roster of brand partners is expanding.

To meet this demand, we’re looking for a seasoned, independent sales professional to lead the charge on some of our premier custom publishing projects—starting with our highly anticipated Visit Oceanside annual guide.

Let’s be clear: This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for an experienced closer who wants a lucrative, flexible part-time or independent contractor opportunity. You bring the Rolodex and the sales chops; we provide the award-winning platforms. The best part? If you crush it on these custom projects, there is a massive opportunity to expand your portfolio, sell across our other platforms, and potentially grow this into a full-time role if that’s your ultimate goal.

People who thrive here give a damn about brands and their stories—from local startups to global icons—and know how to leverage the millions of eyeballs on SDM’s platform to help our partners win.

So, if you have a deep love for San Diego and media and podcasts and video and storytelling and culture and branding and advertising and are motivated and talented and smart and love to socialize and explore and say polite words and play well with others, we’re looking for you.

SDM started 77 years ago with the monthly glossy magazine (still going strong), and now boasts a national award-winning podcast, one of the region’s largest social media platforms, newsletters, five annual sold-out events, and a custom branding and video production studio.

Media Sales Representative Responsibilities

Daily Duties

  • Own the Project: Act as the dedicated sales lead on specific custom publishing initiatives (like the Visit Oceanside guide), driving revenue and building the book of business from the ground up.
  • Storytell with Strategy: Work with our in-house creative branding team to come up with innovative, creative, compelling stories for brands and partners.
  • Master the Platform: Understand how SDM’s platforms work and their advantages so you can clearly explain our products, services, and marketing promotions.
  • Build the Network: Make meaningful contacts and relationships with businesses and brands, helping them translate their stories and honestly, effectively broadcast their messages.
  • Hustle for Leads: Generate leads through your existing network, in-person networking at social events, through tech, and through all the ways.
  • Pitch with Magic: Schedule and execute presentations to create a visual explanation of the magic and stats of SDM.
  • Consult and Solve: Listen carefully to customer concerns and find real solutions that deliver for them (we never sell something unless we know it works for the client).
  • Innovate: Suggest new marketing strategies to connect with a specific region or demographic.
  • Stay Sharp: Attend meetings, Zoom calls, and webinars to enhance sales tactics, stay on top of industry trends, and gain additional knowledge on our clients.
  • Keep Clean Records: Input accurate customer information in our system including billing, address, contact information, and account preferences.

You get it. Own the project. Do sales. But do it well, with meaning, expertise, and compassion.
