A London critic heralded them as the “Jay-Z and Beyoncé” of opera, and Vanity Fair called them a “match made in verismo heaven.” And you can hear them perform in San Diego on September 5 at the San Diego Opera’s season-opening gala. Husband-and-wife duo Stephen Costello and Ailyn Pérez are promoting their just-released album, Love Duets, based on their performances with the San Francisco Opera, among others. Fun fact? They were first cast together in San Diego back in 2011 as Romeo and Juliet, before they were married.
“San Diego Opera’s community has been exemplary and heroic in their success in saving the company. This demonstrates how vital opera is and how much the public desires this music,” Pérez says, referring to the opera’s comeback after its board voted to close operations because of a lack of funding earlier this year. Costello is equally hopeful. “I feel that what the company has done recently not only brought new life to opera, but raised the bar,” he says. “If you are passionate about this art form you must do whatever you can to keep it alive. I am proud to be part of the launch of the new San Diego Opera.”
