Do-gooding on the Fly

Help save the planet for just $1

By Christina Orlovsky Page

San Diego International Airport recently launched The Good Traveler, a pilot program aimed at promoting sustainable travel. For just $1, travelers purchase a Good Traveler tag at an airport kiosk or at one of the program’s partners, including Paradise Point Resort and Ryan Bros. Coffee in terminals 1 and 2. Each purchase offsets 500 miles of air travel or 200 miles of driving by benefiting three projects: forest restoration in California, a wind farm in Idaho, and water restoration in the Colorado Delta—all of which help balance the environmental impact of CO2 emissions.

In the first six weeks since its launch, Good Traveler offset more than 1.5 million miles of travel, with 1,464 reservations at Paradise Point Resort contributing to the cause. The program’s been so successful that the airport is seeking more partners to expand it. Think of it as a new way to travel light.
