Lymphoma and Leukemia Society Light The Night
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society hosted its 15th Annual Light The Night Walk on Nov. 8. The walk is a two-mile course that brings together thousands of individuals to raise funds for lifesaving blood cancer research and critical patient and family services. This year $700,000 was raised topping last year’s $610,000. Joanna Winsborough, Senior Campaign Manager for the Light The Night Walk in San Diego said, “the Walk was our opportunity to fundraise for those battling leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma and help them live better, longer lives.” The San Diego Padres and Metzger Law Group were the event gold sponsors. Others included OneSource Distributors, IBM, GEICO, Big Box Storage and Olive Garden.
San Diego County Credit Union was a sponsor of the 31st annual Home of Guiding Hands Golf Classic Pro-Am Tournament, which raised $45,000. The tournament was held on Sept. 27 at Sycuan Resort in El Cajon. The money raised supports the services, training and advocacy to adults and children with disabilities including intellectual disabilities, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and autism.
Mental Health Systems Luncheon Be The Hope honoring Frank Urtasun
The Mental Health Systems Be The Hope Luncheon was held on Nov. 6 and raised $100,000 to help support the programs of MHS. The first ever “Be The Hope” award was presented to Frank Urtasun for his outstanding work in the San Diego Community for non-profits. The luncheon was an opportunity to provide people with information about being part of a solution to improving the lives of individuals who suffer from mental illness and substance abuse problems.
The San Diego County Medical Society Foundation received a $20,000 grant from the RGK Foundation. SDCMSF will use the funds for Project Access San Diego, which provides free specialty medical care to low-income uninsured San Diego residents. This grant will be used for patient care management, translation and transportation services.
Ovarian Cancer Survivors supporting the Clearity Foundation
On Oct. 27, ovarian cancer patients, survivors, and their friends participated in an event at The sporting Club in UTC. A total of #52,506 was raised to support The Clearity Foundation. The Foundation assists women with recurrent ovarian cancer to have their tumors profiled to determine what drug is most likely to work with their tumor type.
The AT&T Developer Program, San Diego Gas & Electric and California Public Utility Commissioner Catherine Sandoval hosted a hackathon the weekend of Nov. 9, challenging San Diegans to build apps that would allow consumers to better manage their energy consumption. Attendees camped out at SDG&E’s Energy Innovation Center during a 24-hour timeframe, creating 10 mobile apps designed to facilitate energy conservation while competing for $10,000 in cash prizes. Hackathons serve as a catalyst for new innovations and entrepreneurial opportunities, providing attendees with the resources, education, and environment and networking structure need to produce quality apps in less time with fewer expenses.
Professor emeriti Margaret Marshall, founder of the dance program at the University of California, San Diego, has established with her husband, Mark Marshall, a $100,000 endowment fund to continue the legacy of dance in the Division of Arts and Humanities. “We wanted to create an endowment to support the undergraduate dance students that rise to the top,” said Margaret Marshall.

Tri-City Diamond Ball
The 5th Annual Storybook Ball benefiting United Through Reading was held on Nov. 9 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. BAE Systems was the Title Sponsor. Diane Parisi of BAE presented the Angel Award to Liza McFadden, president of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. The event raised $350,000 to support the video reading program which keeps military moms and dads connected to their children through reading.
Tri-City Hospital Foundation recognized John Haedrich of Carlsbad with the Legacy Award at the Diamond Ball which was held on Nov. 2. “Big John” served on the board for more than 20 years and has been involved as a sponsor and donor since retiring from the board in 2005. He has also worked on youth sports to 4H activities, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce to seniors programs. The event raised a net of $200,000 to be used to fund life-saving devices at Tri-City Medical Center, including a state-of-the-art cardiac imaging machine. Sponsors included Tri-City Medical Center, Elmcroft Senior Living, San Diego Imaging, Lockton Insurance Brokers and Dummit, Buchholz & Trapp.
