Q: I’ve heard that sunscreen can sometimes contain harmful ingredients. Is this true? What is the best or safest kind of sunscreen to use?
A: Every hour, one person in the US dies of skin cancer—no one has ever died from sunscreen that I know of. While some formulations are better than others, mineral sunscreens, protective clothing, sunglasses, and hats are safe and effective.

Q: My vitamin D is low because I don’t get enough sun—is that true?
A: Not necessarily. Vitamin D needs vary, and excess sun exposure is not the safest source. Dietary sources can provide vitamin D without raising skin cancer risk—20% of Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
