Very Important Taco: Jackfruit Taco at Del Sur

The savory tropical fruit makes for a perfect meat substitute

By Sanna Boman Coates

South Park’s newest Mexican eatery prides itself on being welcoming to all: kids, dogs—and vegetarians.

On a menu heavily focused on the usual suspects—tacos, burritos, enchiladas—what stands out most is the jackfruit taco. The savory tropical fruit has garnered a reputation as a low-calorie meat substitute, and with a texture similar to pulled pork or chicken, it’s often used in vegan barbecue dishes.

Del Sur’s version is no exception. The adobo-marinated jackfruit is served on a bed of cabbage and topped with chipotle sauce and a creamy citrus aioli. With the perfect balance of creamy, crunchy, and tangy, it’s a vegetarian taco for meat lovers.

Get it as a plate with rice and beans, or à la carte with a side of South Park street corn. And don’t forget the salsa—according to several sources, it’s the best in town.
