The Malandain Ballet Biarritz brings a noir version of the classic fairy tale to the Civic Theatre
1100 3rd Avenue, Downtown
Just in time for this month’s live-action film, the Malandain Ballet Biarritz will bring a full-length version of 18th-century French fairy tale turned Disney classic Beauty and the Beast to San Diego’s Civic Theatre on March 18.
Presented by La Jolla Music Society, the French company’s rendition blends old with new—including music by Tchaikovsky and a troupe of 22 classically trained dancers paired with contemporary moves by director-choreographer Thierry Malandain, who previously danced with the Ballet National de l’Opéra de Paris and has spearheaded ballets of Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, and The Nutcracker.
But this is no Disney adaptation. Ready to see the show tackle questions of morality, sin, and sexuality? Be our guest.
