Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns presented the Donald N Sharp Medal for Philanthropy – Sharp HealthCare Foundation’s most prestigious philanthropic award for generosity, to Papa Doug and Geniya Manchester. The award was presented at a reception on November 30 celebrating their $1 million gift to name the Labor and Delivery Unit. The Manchester family plaque was unveiled by Sharp HealthCare leadership including Mike Murphy and Trisha Kahleghi.
The San Diego LGBT Community Center announced a 4:1 challenge grant to raise $2 million for The Center and its programs. Every dollar donated prior to December 31, will be matched 4:1 during the end-of-year fundraising campaign. The Center can raise up to $400,000 that will be matched by a $1.6 million gift, a gift from Ron Bowmand and his husband Stan Zukowfsky.
The Gingerbread City Gala
Dr. Michael Cunningham was the Honorary Chair of this year’s Gingerbread City Gala. The event raised a record-breaking $400,000 for the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County. The evening featured delicacies prepared by Host Chef William Bradley of Addison Restaurant at The Grand Del Mar along with other chefs from San Diego restaurants. Proceeds support the free programs and services offered to children and adults living with epilepsy in San Diego County. The Grand Prize Winner, “Wonder World,” was on display at the Mingei Museum in Balboa Park during December Nights December 1st and 2nd.
On November 28 Sheriff William Gore, San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott, County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar and San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan went to jail to raise money to support Second Chance services. The event was held at Palm Plaza at Westfield UTC Mail in honor of Giving Tuesday. The goal was to raise $10,000 through the “Bail Me Out” campaign and surpassed that by raising $18,053.Proceeds will go to benefit Second Chance programs that provide employment skills and amenities to the men, women and youth who seek an opportunity to become self-sufficient.
Marine Group Boat Works donated $21,000 to the Living Coast Discovery Center zoo aquarium on San Diego Bay in Chula Vista. Marine Group Boat Works has donated a total of $160,000 over the past seven years for coastal wildlife, education and sustainability programs.
The Mad Hatter Tea Party
On November 4 Junior League of San Diego held its second annual gala at Morgan Run Country Club to support youth transitioning out of foster care, combat human trafficking in San Diego and empower women to become strong volunteer leaders in the community. The Mad Hatter Tea Party –themed gala honored Dairrick Hodges, Ann Hill and Senator Toni Atkins. Event sponsors included Smith & Scatizzi, Kaclyn Dry, White Feather Investments Alanna Strei and Kendra Scott.
On December 6 children living at Father Joe’s Villages rode in limousines, accompanied by a parade of motorcycles from the Harley Owners Group to Little Italy DoubleTree Hotel For a holiday party. They were treated to a holiday feast, balloons, games, crafts and gifts delivered by Santa.

Diane Coombs, founder of the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy’s Watershed Explorers Program, was honored at the North County Philanthropy Council’s 2017 30th Anniversary Volunteer Awards Luncheon. The luncheon was held at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Diane was recognized for her long time support of the Conservancy. Presented by Tri-City Medical Center, the luncheon recognized outstanding volunteers from the Council’s member organizations.
