San Diego Summer Feast at Suzie’s Farm
WHEN: July 30, 3:30 p.m.
WHERE: Suzie’s Farm, 2570 Sunset Ave., San Diego
Suzie’s Farm has created a pretty special place down near the border along the I-5 Freeway. With big trees, wide open fields filled with organic crops, a stage for performing, and various little hangouts in the open air, it’s farm as laid-back event space. Owners Robin Taylor and wife Lucila De Alejandro have also done more to champion local food and ethical farming than most in San Diego. It’s time to go see for yourself. Summer Feast is a partnership with one of the most ardent farm-to-table chefs in the county, Jeff Rossman of Terra American Bistro. Local wines and beers will be poured. Farm tours will be given. A $500 donation will go to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank.
COST: $138
Coronado Brewing Company’s 20th Anniversary
WHEN: July 30, 4-9 p.m.
WHERE: Coronado Brew Tasting Room, 1205 Knoxville St., Bay Park
Hard to believe there wasn’t a single brewery in San Diego until Karl Strauss opened in 1984. Now Coronado Brewing Company is celebrating 20 years on the scene. I got a taste of their 20th Anniversary Double IPA and it’s a doozy; huge with caramel and malt. That’ll be on display for tasting at this shindig, along with the classics and specialty brewers casks. There’ll be food trucks (BFD Sandwiches, Seoul Man, South Jersey), a band (Chugboat), plus you’ll get a pint, a commemorative glass, etc. Congrats to one of San Diego’s best.
COST: $15
“We Are One” Block Party
WHEN: July 31, 1-5 p.m.
WHERE: Little Italy
For a restaurant group that isn’t local, Café Gratitude does a good job of investing in the local community. They’re throwing this block party to celebrate their one-year anniversary. Dr. Bronner’s will be there with their Magic Fire Truck and “Magic Foam Experience” (literally covering you in peppermint bubbles); there will be a 15-foot mobile learning farm for kids; you bring a t-shirt and they’ll screen print it for free with the “We Are One” logo; henna tattoos; plant-based cake cutting ceremony; and live music. Now this last bit of info is pure conjecture. Absolute zero confirmed. But Jason Mraz, a San Diego native, is one of the partners in Café Gratitude. Might there be a chance that attendees will get to see a short set from the Grammy winner at this party? For fans, worth a gamble.
