Trail of the Month: Maple Canyon Trail

Maple Canyon trail map

Get there: The trail starts on West Maple Street near its intersection with State Street. Start at the sign that says “Maple Canyon Open Space” and run up the trail under First Avenue to Quince Street. From there, you can loop through Balboa Park or follow Second Avenue to Spruce Street and take the Spruce Street bridge to Curlew Street, which takes you back to your start.

Why We Love It: This trail feels like a hidden passageway in the heart of Bankers Hill. If you want more of a workout, check out some of the hidden staircases along Reynard Way, and take in views of unusual houses built into the cliffs.

Where to refuel afterward: Head north on Fifth Avenue for casual cafe fare at Papalecco or south to Barrio Star for Mexican eats—and maybe a margarita.
