The late Mary Andrews Haag estate has provided $4.3 million to establish The Frederick and Mary Haag Scholarship Fund at the University of California San Diego. The scholarship bequest was directed from the Mary Andrews Haag Trusts to provide scholarships for outstanding UC San Diego undergraduates. Per the donor’s wishes, the Fund will provide merit-based scholarships to undergraduates with outstanding academic ability. Recent graduate Katie Hutchins plans to attend physical therapy school that she would not have been able to do without scholarship support.

Guardians of San Diego’s 25th Annual Golf & Tennis Tournament presented by The William Gumpert Foundation, held on July 25 at the Del Mar Country Club, raised $200,000. Proceeds from “Take a Swing for Seniors” will benefit the Resident Assistance Fund at Seacrest Village Retirement Communities. Tournament winners were Earl Altshuler, Paul Cohen, Gary Pollak and Jeffrey Pollak. Sponsors included AKT LLP, CPAs and Business Consultants, BYCOR General Contractors, City National Bank, Hughes Marino and WAXIE Sanitary Supply.
The Century Club of San Diego announced that Farmers Insurance, the title sponsor of the Farmers Insurance Open, has committed $800,000 to the Tournament’s “Champions for Youth” program over the next three years. Doris Dunn, Director of Community Relations at Farmers Insurance, said “The education, emergency and health services that these charities provide to foster youth, homeless youth, low income military families and many more are the key to not only changing their lives, but to changing the communities where we live and work for the better.”
Jordan Mishlove and Joe Previte cycled 1,300 miles down the West Coast to raise awareness about access to public lands for urban youth. They raised a total of $1,200 in support of Outdoor Outreach which works to break down social, cultural and financial barriers to the outdoors, providing transportation, equipment, engaging activities, and instructors that represent the diversity of youth served by Outdoor Outreach.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County was one of six outstanding affiliates that have demonstrated leadership and have increased the number of children in their communities, to be recognized during the 2016 National Conference Gala in Orlando. BBBS of San Diego County won the Large Agency Alliance Board of the Year for introducing a strategic plan for serving more children in need of a supportive adult mentor.
The San Diego Blood Bank and the County of San Diego merged their annual respective 5K Walk/Run event, Live Well San Diego 5K, was held on July 30. The event took place at the San Diego County Administration Building’s Waterfront Park and benefits the San Diego Blood Bank.

Junior Achievement of San Diego County will hold its San Diego Business Hall of Fame event on Sept. 27 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar Hotel. The 2016 Lifetime Laureates are: Bob Taylor & Kurt Listug, Taylor Guitars; Dan Spinazzola, Diversified Restaurant Systems, Inc.; and Laurie and Carlee McGrath. These individuals have demonstrated a record of business achievement, business excellence, vision and innovation, inspired leadership and community mindedness. The 11th Annual ArtWalk @ Liberty Station is being held on Aug. 13 and 14. The weekend event is presented by Mission Federal Credit Union and features 200 artists showing their work along with art activities for kids, live music, Stone Brewing and Boisset Collection wines offered in a pavilion and Cool zone micromist sponsored by Scripps Health.
Sprint is providing a $5,000 contribution to chapters of Boys & Girls Clubs across the West to be used for equipping kids with school supplies, clothing, haircuts or to pay for school-related homework, tutoring and study programs. “Sprint is committed to supporting the communities where our employees live and work and our goal is to send these kids back to school with some essential tools needed to help lead them along the path to success,” said Jerry Gallegos, president-West Area at Sprint.
