The Junior League of San Diego welcomed 250 guests at their annual gala at the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park. This event raised $60,000 and guests who attended this masquerade ball enjoyed an evening of dining, music, dancing, and silent and live auctions. Funds raised at the gala support JLSD’s mission-based programs for San Diego’s foster youth community, assist partners to reduce human trafficking, and help train women to become effective community leaders and advocates for social change. At this event, Dr. Jamie Gates won the Spirit of Community Award for his work exposing human trafficking in San Diego.
The San Diego Foundation is giving out hundreds of scholarships through the Community Scholarship Program for San Diego students pursuing higher education during the 2020-21 school year. Students can fill out an online application to access more than $2.7 million in available funds for 140 unique types of scholarships, including those for four-year universities, two-year colleges, graduate, and vocational schools. Graduating high school seniors, undergraduates, graduate, medical and professional school students, and adult re-entry students are all eligible for these scholarships.
“Investing in our students is one of the best ways to expand economic equity and opportunity within our region,” says Danielle Valenciano, director of community scholarships at The San Diego Foundation. “The San Diego Foundation Community Scholarship Program ensures that more youth in San Diego are setup for success as they persist through college and go on to join the regional workforce.”
There were 725 community leaders and members who attended the North County Philanthropy Council’s annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon at the Omni La Costa resort.
The San Diego Homelessness Volunteer Network (SDHVN) is a new online portal that connects prospective volunteers with homelessness-focused nonprofits. This program is in partnership between San Diego City Councilmember Chris Ward and the Regional Task Force on the Homeless (RTFH), powered by United Way of San Diego County.
“As San Diegans who see how homelessness affects our region every day, many of us want to volunteer our time and help, but we don’t know where to start,” says United Way of San Diego County President and CEO Nancy Sasaki.
