San Diego Oasis received a $15,000 grant with an additional $5,000 matching opportunity from The Parker Foundation. The funds will be used to further the work of Oasis to help prevent isolation and lonliness in older adults by providing lifelong learning and healthy living classes, travel activities and literacy tutoring for at risk youth.
San Diego County Credit Union launched its seventh annual Holiday Toy Drive benefiting Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. Toys are being collected at SDCCU locations until December 31. All toys will be donated to RCHSD and Children’s Hospital of Orange County. Donated items may be used throughout the year as gifts to individual patients in various age groups.
San Diego Bike Club cyclists rode 45 miles from UC Cyclery in the La Jolla Village Square to The Salvation Army Kroc Center and back on December 9 as part of SDBC’s 30th Annual Light Up a Life Holiday Toy Ride. Participants in the ride brought a toy to the Kroc Center where they were donated to the Toy n Joy Shop where parents in surrounding areas shopped for their children.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Eric Birnbaum presented the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award to MANA de San Diego at the MANA Holiday Soiree on December 13. They were recognized for their commitment to community leadership and support of youth and education programs. Erica Martinez was also named MANA Member of the Year. She joined MANA and became a mentor. and instantly joined the Hermanitas Leadership Team and is an incoming 2018 Board Member.
ElderHelp’s Holiday Angels
ElderHelp’s Holiday Angels partnered with UPS volunteers to deliver poinsettias and gift cards to seniors and spent time visiting with them. City Council member, Marti Emerald stopped by to honor the event’s “first gift” recipient. For many, this is the only visitor and gift they receive during the season. Sponsors included Hill Compliance Advisors, Lowes Home Improvement Stores, the Mirandon, Foundation for Hope, 2-1-1 and PAWS San Diego. AMN Healthcare, Wawanesa and Intuit provided gift card donations and support.
