Art Alive San Diego Museum of Art

Art Alive 2014 is being held at San Diego Museum of Art on Apr. 11 – 13. This year, Carlos Franco of Green Fresh Florals in San Diego has been selected as the Rotunda Designer and will transform the Museum’s Rotunda into a floral experience themed after the gardens of the Alhambra – the Moorish palace in Granada, Spain. Other floral designers will transform famous works of art from SDMA’s Permanent Collection into exquisite floral displays. Art Alive is the Museum’s signature fundraiser and a San Diego tradition for the past 33 years.

Women Give San Diego celebrated its fourth year as a women’s giving circle on Mar. 10 at its Grants Celebration reception held at the American Humane Society. Grants totaling $92,000 were distributed to three organizations that are changing the lives of women and girls in San Diego working to increase their economic stability and self-sufficiency. Those receiving grants were Community Housing Works, San Diego Youth Services and Niles Sisters. Women Give is the only women giving circle to focus its support solely on women and girls in San Diego County.

ElderHelp raised $25,000 at its Essence of Life Awards on Mar. 16 at the Southwesten Yacht Club. Silvergate Bank was the Presenting Sponsor. Other sponsors included the Michael Ehrenfeld Company, Virginia Napierskie, Wells Fargo and AT&T. County Supervisor Dave Roberts presented Deborah Martin, CEO/Executive Director, with a Certificate declaring March 16 Elderhelp Day.

The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center Library received a $20,000 grant from the Dr. Seuss Fund at the San Diego Foundation to establish the Dr. Seuss Fund Book Collection for the Common Core Standards Library Project. This gift continues to demonstrate the commitment to literacy and its related impact by the Dr. Seuss Fund. These funds will be used to update the library to meet these new standards and better serve students in the community.

The Maritime Museum is holding its annual Chocolate Festival on Apr. 12 & 13. Fifteen vendors will be showcasing their various types of chocolate. Activities are planned for chocolate lovers of all ages. Tastings are included with museum admission.

Meals –on-Wheels Greater San Diego received a $25,000 grant from the Meals On Wheels Association of America on behalf of Subaru of America for its participation in the company’s sixth annual “Share the Love” event. For every vehicle sold or leased between November 21, 2013 and January 2, 2014, Subaru donated $250 to the customer’s choice of charity. Among the five national choices, the Meals On Wheels Association of America was included for the sixth straight year.

San Diego Volunteer Lawyers

San Diego Volunteer Lawyers

San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program presented its annual Volunteer Appreciation Awards at a reception held at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse. Awards were presented to 41 attorneys and law students who volunteered 150 pro bono hours in 2013. The State Bar of California’s Wiley W. Manuel Award was presented to 133 volunteers who contributed 50 hours of pro bono service. The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation presented SDVLP with a grant award of $12,500 at the event, and also recognized SDVLP for its participation in the 2013 AIDS Walk with a matched charitable donation of $10,000.

CBS Channel 8 held the 2014 Telethon For The Animals on Mar. 22 to benefit San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. The event was sponsored by Petco Foundation, Petco, PetSafe, Phil’s B.B.Q, EDCO, Underground Elephant and Wells Fargo. All funds raised go toward saving more animals at SDHS.

Hats off to San Diego, There’s No Place Like Home presented by The Gold Diggers (Gifts of Loving Donors)is set for Apr. 4 at the Hotel Del Coronado. Funds raised will benefit The Polinsky Children’s Center Auxiliary which supports a safe, nurturing, and loving environment that addresses the educational, emotional, physical and social needs of all children who receive or have received services through the Polinksy Children’s Center.
