NBC7 San Diego, in partnership with The NBCUniversal Foundation issued grants totaling $100,000 for three local non-profit organizations. The donations are part of the 21st Century Solutions grant program recognizing and supporting innovation, high-impact initiatives in the areas of Civic Engagement, Education, Environment, Jobs and Economic Empowerment. 21st Century Solutions awards $1.2 million nationwide . One winning organization and two runners-up are selected in each city. The San Diego Recipients include Interfaith Community Services, which will receive $50,000 to support their Teens Teaching Tech (T3) program in Oceanside. Sustainable Surplus Exchange and North County Solutions for Change, each received $25,000.
Nice Guys of San Diego hosted a community Christmas Party on Dec. 14 at Petco Park. Needy families attending received food and gifts provided by The Nice Guys. Attendees included 200 military families and approximately 2,000 kids. All of the children received a Christmas stocking from Santa. Hot dogs, sodas and popcorn were provided free to all family members. In addition, each family received food to take home for a meal and gift certificates for the family to enjoy.

Just in Time for Foster Youth, is holding its annual My First Home for the Holidays campaign through Jan. 11. The goal of the campaign is to collect cash, gift cards, and in-kind donations of new household items such as pots and pans, small kitchen appliances, lamps, and bedding. Donations can be made online at www.jitfosteryouth.org.
The San Diego Chapter of Huntington’s Disease Society of America raised $120,000 at the 13th annual Qualcomm Celebration of Hope Gala held on Oct. 12. Proceeds go to Huntington’s disease research and support services. HD is a fata genetic brain disorder that causes the deterioration of all mental and physical capabilities. Ron Fowler received the Guthrie Award for his continuing support in the fight against HD for the past 15 years. The Guthrie Award pays tribute to legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie, who died from HD. Major sponsors of the gala included Qualcomm, Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, AWM Global Advisors, Lundbeck and Union Bank.

Director of golf at The Grand Del Mar Shawn Cox has been named the recipient of the 2013 Golf Professional of the Year by the San Diego Chapter of the PGA of Southern California. The award was presented at the group’s annual meeting at the San Diego Country Club. Cox was recognized for his significant contributions to community outreach, promoting the game of golf, continuing education and involvement within the PGA.
Casa de Amparo hosted its 11th Annual Holiday Drive on Dec. 17. San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond, City Council members, School Board Members and Kaiser Permanente executives volunteered by wrapping and sorting gifts for Casa Kids who range from prenatal up to 24 years old and have been at risk or affected by child abuse or neglect.
North County Health Services held a children’s party on Dec. 20 at the Mission Mesa Pediatrics Health Center in Oceanside. Walgreens assisted with photos with Santa for each child to receive at the end of the party. All of the children also received a gift. NCHS was happy to provide the party for patients who are the underserved children in Oceanside.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego held its Christmas Tree Lane on Dec. 6 at the California Center For the Arts in Escondido. The event raised $72,000 for the BGCGSD. California Bank & Trust was the Presenting Partner. Other partners included George Weir Asphalt Construction, Jani-King, KPMG, Mission Federal Credit Union, Pacific Standard Insurance and ZM Norwood & Co.
Soon The Salvation Army bells will go silent as the holidays end. This is your last chance this Christmas to help ring the sound of hope for your neighbors in need. So many still need food, refuge, hope, and help. Hungry children, struggling moms, homeless men, and vulnerable seniors shouldn’t go to bed hungry – especially at Christmas.
